Legislation to Combat Antisemitism Becomes Law
MADISON, Wis. — Legislation by Senator Rob Hutton (R-Brookfield) and Representative Ron Tusler (R-Harrison) that codifies an internationally recognized definition of antisemitism in state statutes, was signed into law by the Governor on Friday.
Assembly Bill 446, now 2025 Wisconsin Act 143, codifies the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism as adopted May 26, 2016. The bill requires state and local governments to consider that definition when they evaluate whether a crime was motivated by hate, in this case toward Jewish individuals.
“We should abhor and condemn all hate, and with antisemitic crime spiking sharply in recent years, this bill simply gives courts an important tool for gauging the role of antisemitic hate in criminal behavior like vandalism, intimidation or violence. Thank you to the strong bipartisan coalition that recognized the severity of this problem and got this bill across the finish line,” Hutton said.
