Ketanji Brown Jackson officially makes history on the Supreme Court
Statement of Alderwoman Chantia Lewis, Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs and Alderwoman Nikiya Dodd July 1, 2022
Yesterday a glass ceiling was shattered as Ketanji Brown Jackson took her constitutional and judicial oaths, formally placing her as a sitting member of the Supreme Court. She becomes the 116th justice, sixth female and the first ever Black female to serve on the nation’s highest court. Having this level of diversity on the Supreme Court is long overdue, and is both a historical and inspirational moment.
The importance of diverse representation was made clear by the recent Supreme Court decision that took away a woman’s constitutional right to choose (whether or not to have an abortion) under Roe v. Wade. Very simply, we need the Court to look MUCH more like the U.S. population!
Justice Jackson comes to the Supreme Court with impeccable credentials and qualifications, and as she rolls up her sleeves to start her work for the people, we look forward to seeing the impact she will have on our country and wish her nothing but success as she embarks on this ground-breaking journey.
