Kam Jones Named BIG EAST Player of the Week

Junior guard averaged 34.0 ppg. in two wins

Marquette guard Kam Jones has been selected BIG EAST Player of the Week and Connecticut guard Stephon Castle is the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. Jones takes Player honors for the second time this season. Castle wins Freshman honors for the eighth time in the last nine weeks.

BIG EAST Player of the Week
Kam Jones, Marquette, G, Jr. – Jones produced a pair of 34-point games in a 2-0 week for the Golden Eagles. In the two victories, the junior combined to shoot 71.9 percent (23-of-32) from the floor and 70-percent (14-of-20) from 3-point range. Marquette defeated DePaul 107-71 and Xavier 88-64. He is the first BIG EAST player to score 34 or more points in consecutive league games since MU’s Markus Howard in 2019-20.

In Jones’ trio of 30-point games this season, he also scored 31 points at Georgetown on Feb. 23, has played just an average of 24.0 minutes per night.

BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Stephon Castle, UConn, G, Fr. – Castle averaged 12.0 points and 4.0 rebounds in a 1-1 week that included 14 points, six rebounds and two blocks in a 78-54 victory over Villanova. His ninth Freshman of the Week honor ties for second place on the BIG EAST’s all-time list with Georgetown’s Allen Iverson, who was a freshman in 1994-95. Syracuse’s Carmelo Anthony is the all-time leader with 10 in 2002-03.

BIG EAST Honor Roll
Tristen Newton, Connecticut, G, Jr. – Averaged 18.5 points, 14.0 boards and 7.0 assists in a 1-1 week. Had a triple-double in a win against Villanova with 10 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists.

Trey Alexander, Creighton, G, Jr. – Averaged 23.5 points, 3.5 assists and 3.0 rebounds in a 1-1 week that included a win over No. 1 UConn (85-66) and a loss at St. John’s (80-66). Had a season-high 31 points at St. John’s.

Jayden Epps, Georgetown, G, So. – Averaged 32.0 points and 6.0 assists while shooting 55.3 percent from the field in a 1-1 week. Had 33 points in a win at DePaul.

Devin Carter, Providence, G, Jr. – Posted 22 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and four blocked shots in a victory at Xavier (79-75).

Daniss Jenkins, St. John’s, G, Gr. – In a 2-0 week, averaged 21.0 points and 5.5 assists. Shot 65.4 percent (17-26) from the field. Had a season-high 27 points, six assists and only one turnover in a win over Creighton (80-66).
