MilwaukeeJohn Myer, Senior Counsel in the Madison office of Husch Blackwell, has been named a Fellow at 5 Lakes Institute. In this role, Myer will help entrepreneurs, researchers and businesses in the Midwest/Great Lakes region identify and overcome challenges to commercialization of innovation technology.

“We’re thrilled that John has agreed to dedicate his time and expertise to growing our region’s technical assets, entrepreneurial talent and global competitiveness,” said John Byrnes, 5 Lakes Institute Chairman.

“John Myer is an accomplished lawyer with a knack for seeing the big picture. He’s a native of this region and as passionate as we are about realizing its full economic potential,” said Kathleen Gallagher, 5 Lakes Institute Executive Director.

The Midwest/Great Lakes region is home to world-leading businesses and institutions in a range of critical sectors from agriculture and food & beverage to automation, logistics, healthcare, telecom, deep tech and more. As a region it has one of the largest economies in the world and would, if it were a country, have one of the world’s highest national GDPs. There is more than $21 billion of academic and nonprofit research spending in the region.

“The global competitiveness of the United States depends on the success of the Great Lakes region, particularly as a leader in emerging and innovative technologies like AI, quantum computing, and fusion energy,” Myer said. “I am thrilled to join 5 Lakes Institute at this critical time for our region and our nation.”

Myer brings an extraordinary toolset for helping carry out 5 Lakes Institute’s mission. In addition to his work at Husch Blackwell, Myer is a mentor at mHub, a hard tech startup accelerator in Chicago, and Board Chair of the Textile Arts Center in Madison. He previously was General Counsel and Corporate Secretary at the Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) and before that, Associate General Counsel at Trane/Ingersoll Rand. Myer has a law degree from University of Michigan Law School and an undergraduate degree in English and Politics from Oberlin College.

Myer joins industrial automation consultant Dave Vasko as a Senior 5 Lakes Fellow. Vasko was previously Senior Director Advanced Technology at Rockwell Automation and a member of the Visiting Committee on Advanced Technology (VCAT) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Vasko currently serves on NIST’s Manufacturing Extension Partnership Advisory Board.
