Inauguration Day brings much needed spirit of renewal

Statement of Alderwoman Chantia Lewis January 20, 2021

As one presidential term comes to an end, another begins, and with that comes hope for a better America. This election year has emphasized the ideological division occurring in our country today, and a polarization between two parties has tested the integrity of our entire government system. Having finally reached inauguration day, I hope to see this new administration’s ability to reach a point of stability and the opposite of chaos, and for it to reach across the aisle and mend a wounded America.

Today we witness the glass ceiling break as we welcome the first female vice president (and a female vice president of color!) in the history of the United States of America. As a woman, and a woman of color, I see this day as the glimmer of light at the end of this long-distorted tunnel, while women across America are donning our pearls in solidarity. I hope that today inspires women, from all walks of life, to utilize their power and actualize their dreams and aspirations.

This day not only serves as a monumental moment for women, but for all Americans. With an initiative to confront this COVID crisis, expand free testing and vaccination, and implement new policies for paid leave, President Biden’s plans insist on a healthier and more centered America.

As we go through this period of change, I encourage generations both old and new to continue putting pressure on our elected officials. We must continue to demand social equality, racial equity and social justice as we navigate ourselves through these troubling times and use this wonderful opportunity as a catalyst for national transformation.

These past four years have shown us the worst that the United States has to offer, but they have also shown us the best. Firefighters from across the country headed toward the burning flames, officers and citizens found common ground at peaceful gatherings, and people have found ways to connect, even while staying six feet apart.

I am hopeful that these next four years will show Milwaukeeans and all Americans that when we come together, a better future is possible. Importantly, we’ve seen the best of America come together to fight for change, while displaying unity that we all need in this time.
