Immerse Yourself in Black History Month with Community Events and Offerings
Statement of Alderman Khalif J. Rainey
Black History Month is a time to celebrate the rich history and fullness of African-American culture, and acknowledge the impact it has made in our community. Milwaukee has a wide array of offerings throughout the month of February, and I would encourage everyone to spend some time this month learning and reflecting by taking in one, or multiple, events that will cover a wide range of topics.
These are just some of the many notable events taking place during Black History Month:
- Black History Month readings at Tricklebee Café – every Thursday from 6 – 8 p.m.
- Stars, Stories, & Rhythms of Africa at the UW-Milwaukee Manfred Olson Planetarium – a free event featuring indoor stargazing, dancing, music, and storytelling on Thursday, February 9 from 6 – 8 p.m.
- Black and green history at Havenwoods, stories featuring Black environmentalists both local and international – Saturday, February 18 from 1 – 2 p.m.
- City of Milwaukee Black History Celebration – Tuesday, February 28 at City Hall beginning at noon
These events are in addition to other ongoing opportunities that exist all month long such as Milwaukee Film’s Black History Month programming, Milwaukee Area Technical College’s “Magical Black Tears Experience,” interactive exhibit, and the Milwaukee Public Library slate of Black History Month events, to name a few.
Those interested in a historical journey can also take a visit to the Wisconsin Black Historical Society Museum or America’s Black Holocaust Museum which are available to access in February and beyond. And of course, don’t forget to support local Black-owned businesses, many of which can be found by visiting https://mkeblack.org/.
