Historically Lazy Legislative Republicans Leave Work Undone on Rising Costs, Healthcare, Childcare, Public School Funding, and More

MADISON, Wis. — One of the least active and least productive sessions of the Wisconsin state legislature has come to a close as the Senate Republicans adjourned the 2026 floor session for the year on Tuesday.

“Wisconsinites needed the legislature to take action on important issues,” said Lucy Ripp, communications director at A Better Wisconsin Together. “But the Republicans in the majority in the Senate and Assembly are taking a months-long, taxpayer-funded vacation instead of working on the issues the people sent them to Madison to fix.”

By adjourning the session for the year in March, Republicans killed bills that could have helped families reduce their grocery bills and cut prescription drug costs, extended the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship program to protect sensitive state land, protected consumers from health insurance company abuses, legalized marijuana for medicinal and recreational use, and delivered property tax savings and helped fund public schools.

Ripp noted that Senate Republicans’ refusal to address lower property taxes or adequate funding for Wisconsin’s public schools is so egregious that they now are being sued by parents, educators, and advocates alike.

Ripp concluded, “There are no shortages of ideas to help Wisconsin working people and families. But instead of working together with Democrats and taking on the important issues, Republicans are taking off for the rest of the year.”
