Historic King Drive Business Improvement District No. 8 and TRUE Skool Join Forces for the King Legacy Project: A Celebratory Artistic Fusion of Dr. King’s Words on King Drive

January 15, 2024 – The Historic King Drive Business Improvement District No. 8 (BID No. 8) is excited to announce a collaboration with  TRUE Skool, an influential local organization empowering youth through transformative arts & Hip Hop culture. Together, they proudly unveil the “King Legacy Project,” an innovative initiative made possible through the generous support of Joy Engine’s 2024 Community Challenge grant.

TRUE Skool facilitated the contributions of original and unique artworks by a diverse group of talented Milwaukee artists, including Mystic Phoenix Art – CaBeatrice Hart & Tayla Hart, Kaelyn Hart, Adjua Nsoroma, Ras Ammar Nsoroma, Pamela Graham, Amira Graham, Tyrone Randle, Mahala Sy Taterczynski, and Cecelia Hall. Lead digital design artist Ernesto Gomez finalized the collection by adding the inspirational words of  Dr. King.

This public gallery highlights businesses along King Drive with a vibrant showcase of inspiration infusing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s words, images, and teachings with original artwork.  Participating spaces and businesses in this transformative project include Mi Casa Su Cafe 1835 N MLK Jr. Dr, Rise and Grind Café 2737 N MLK Jr. Drive, the second round of installations will be on January 19th, 1916 Black, 1916 N MLK Jr. Drive, North Shore Bank, 1900 N MLK Jr Dr., and Niche Book bar, 1937 N MLK Jr. Dr.. These establishments will visually celebrate Dr. King’s legacy, ensuring his words live on.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Joy Engine for their support in making this project a reality. Together with TRUE Skool and these incredible artists, we are forging a legacy that honors Dr. King’s words on King Drive.”

Join us in commemorating this extraordinary collaboration and celebrating the timeless words of Dr. King brought to life through the King Legacy Project. These installations will be displayed from January 15th, 2024 until April 30th, 2024. This collaboration will also include a virtual event in February hosted by Trueskool as well as a special edition King Drive business directory that will feature the artistic legacy creations.
