Governor Scott Walker announced today $38.6 million will go to fund an additional 70 local bridge projects statewide for the 2018-2022 Local Bridge Improvement Program cycle. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation Southeast Region will receive a total of over $12 million to fund 12 additional local bridges.

“Today, with passage from the Joint Committee on Finance, 70 additional local bridge projects will advance the connection of people and commerce across Wisconsin,” said Governor Walker. “We’re making the largest increases in local road and bridge aids that have been seen in 20 years ensuring continued economic development for the state.”

The Local Bridge Program has adopted a replace-in-kind policy where emphasis is placed on a safe and effective bridge on the existing bridge footprint. Eligible project costs are those that replace the existing structure, with necessary adjustments made for current standards, safety, and other factors. Local funds may be used for enhancement beyond that scope based on local priorities.

This announcement comes following funding of $76.4 million for 113 local bridges across Wisconsin, bringing the total to 183. Governor Walker’s budget included an increase of $20 million to the local bridge program.

A full listing of the approved projects is available on the WisDOT website.
