Governor Evers approves WIS 145 improvements to begin in Milwaukee County
To invest in Wisconsin’s transportation system, Governor Evers signed a $13.7 million contract to resurface WIS 145 (Fond du Lac Freeway) from 68th Street to Good Hope Road in the city of Milwaukee. The project also includes improving various bridges along WIS 145, as well as nearby WIS 175 (Appleton Avenue), and WIS 181 (76th Street).
Work is scheduled to begin February 21, weather permitting. Payne and Dolan, Inc. is the prime contractor for the project and will implement the following:
Project Improvements
- Resurfacing four miles of WIS 145
- Restriping WIS 145 to become a two-lane roadway facility in each direction
- The improvement will make use of the existing two-inside travel lanes in each direction.
- The previous outside third lane will be converted to longer ramp acceleration and deceleration lanes allowing additional space to merge with mainline traffic, along with providing a wider shoulder.
- Bridge deck replacement and painting of the Grantosa Drive bridges over WIS 145
- Application of a thin polymer overlay to eight bridges located along WIS 145, WIS 175, and WIS 181
- Spot repairs and painting to the WIS 145 bridges over the Union Pacific Railroad and Flagg Avenue
- Repaving shoulders and installing new beam guard along WIS 145 north of Good Hope Road
What to Expect
- Traffic along WIS 145 will be reduced to one lane in each direction during construction.

Construction is scheduled for completion by fall 2022. The schedule is dependent on favorable weather conditions and construction progress.

WIS 241 Closed Near Root River in Milwaukee County Due to Flooding

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) encourages drivers to be aware of changing travel conditions. “Know before you go” with 511 Wisconsin, 511wi.gov or via the free app, to view highway closures impacted by flooding and weather alerts across the state. Current highway closure: Milwaukee County WIS 241 (27th Street) near the Root River is closed in both directions, Milwaukee County The timeline for reopening these roads remains unknown, as river levels are still cresting, and additional rain is anticipated. WisDOT officials are closely monitoring the roads and river levels and will reopen them as soon as it is safe to do so. While it’s difficult to predict if or where flooding may occur, WisDOT offers these tips: Flooding conditions may change rapidly so drive with caution at all times. Never drive through standing water or around barriers. As the safety slogan goes, “Turn Around, Don’t Drown!” It only takes a foot of rushing water to sweep away or float most cars and just two feet of rushing water can carry away SUVs and trucks. Just six inches of floodwater will reach the bottom of most passenger cars, causing loss of control and possible stalling. Stay alert and slow down. Follow designated detour routes if state, county and local roads experience flooding. If you must travel, check 511 Wisconsin for the latest information on any road closures or impacts.
