Common Council President Jose Perez
Press Release

Going green is good news for workers and the environment

Statement from Alderman José G. Pérez September 25, 2013

I tip my hat to American United Taxi Company, a 12th Aldermanic District employer, on its announcement that it will be utilizing Toyota Prius taxicabs, and converting half its fleet to hybrid vehicles by 2015. The announcement of this investment is great news, as it will help the environment while also helping taxicab drivers.

The hybrid Prius not only emits a fraction of the carbon emissions of an ordinary sedan, but it also reduces fuel consumption by approximately 50%. The significant reduction in fuel consumption leads to additional income for taxicab drivers as their out-of-pocket expenses are reduced.

American United Cab Company has employed as many as 175 people during busy times, many of them from the immediate area. This is in addition to the 200 drivers who work with the company to provide taxicab service to the city. The company has invested millions of dollars acquiring and improving properties within the Walker’s Point neighborhood in the 12th Aldermanic District. The conversion of their fleet to new, environmentally sustainable hybrid vehicles is another example of their commitment to the neighborhood and the community. –
