Generous donation aims to spur homeownership in Harambee for Early Childhood Educators
Statement of Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs April 24, 2025
During a news conference held yesterday (Wednesday, April 23) afternoon, Herb Kohl Philanthropies announced a $1 million donation to CDA and Acts Housing in support of boosting home ownership in the Harambee neighborhood, and specifically for the early childhood educators (ECE) homes project.
I want to offer my sincere thanks to Herb Kohl Philanthropies (HKP) for its generous donation, as four houses are currently under construction.
The ECE homes will be sold for approximately $105,000 to qualifying early childhood educators who make $20 or less per hour ($40,000 or less per year), and because of that pay level there is typically a shortage of such workers. Based on the locations of the homes and affiliated child care providers, it is anticipated that most of the future owners will be Black or Hispanic.
I applaud this initiative’s efforts to erase the disparities in home ownership that affect minority homebuyers. There needs to be more efforts like this one that help people in typically disadvantaged communities push through barriers to homeownership, and hopefully this initiative serves as inspiration for other philanthropic entities to also invest in affordable housing for early childhood educators as well.
Well done, HKP!
