Gaudete Brass Quintet to Perform with Carthage Wind Orchestra in First Band Concert Reenactment
KENOSHA, Wis. – Carthage College is thrilled to announce a collaboration between the Gaudete Brass Quintet and the Wind Orchestra. This unique performance is set to take place at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at the A. F. Siebert Chapel as part of the Performing Arts Series.
The Carthage Bands will begin the concert with a historic re-creation of the first selections mentioned in the first year of performing as a six-member “brass band” in 1873. These will be combined with other pieces likely to have been heard in the early years of the group. To aid in authenticity, instruments dating from the time of the Civil War have been provided by the 1st Brigade Band of Watertown, Wisconsin, and will be used by the Gaudete Brass Quintet for their performance.
Beginning with patriotic settings of “America” and Stephen Foster’s “Santa Ana’s Retreat from Buena Vista,” the Concert Band will also play Wilhelm Piefke’s “Düppler Schanzen Sturm” march from the first Carthage Band program. Selections from the first program, “Croquet Waltz” and “St. Louis Quickstep,” will then be played by the Gaudete Brass Quintet on the historic brass band instruments known as helicons. The groups will then combine for Charles Ives’ “Variations on Jerusalem the Golden” and Claudio Grafulla’s “Andante and Waltz.”
Join us on Wednesday, February 28, at the A. F. Siebert Chapel for an evening of artistic mastery.
