Finance Committee Unanimously Recommends Supervisors Rolland, Taylor, Martinez Amendment Increasing Infrastructure and Parks Funding

MILWAUKEE – Today the County Board’s Finance Committee unanimously recommended for adoption a budget amendment by Supervisors Shawn Rolland, Steve F. Taylor, and Juan Miguel Martinez to provide funding for several improvements to both parks and infrastructure in Milwaukee County.

“I am beyond elated to work with my fellow Supervisors to reaffirm Milwaukee County’s commitment to our parks,” said Supervisor Martinez. “As a lifelong user of Mitchell Park, I have seen firsthand how imperative it is that improvements be made. District 12 will not reach its full potential without this green space thriving. Additionally, I’d like to applaud the fact that necessary improvements would be made to the Oak Leaf Trail by this amendment and would encourage my colleagues to support it.

“Access to Bender Park is a priority of mine and this amendment helps accomplish that goal,” said Supervisor Taylor. “Millions of dollars are currently being invested by the City of Oak Creek at Lake Vista Park which will increase the number of visitors to this Milwaukee County jewel. It is important that we take care of this asset. I appreciate the support of my colleagues on the Committee on Finance.”

“My neighbors have told me to, ‘Fix our parks and our crumbling parkways,’ and that’s what our Finance Committee’s unanimous vote will help do,” said Supervisor Rolland. “The vote accelerates parks and parkway improvements – making Wauwatosa and Milwaukee County an even better place to live, hike, bike and enjoy. It also funds a new strategic plan to reimagine Mitchell Park and its Horticultural Conservatory – a long-deferred planning process that can now move forward. I am thankful for the 7-0 vote and am optimistic about the investments to come!”

The amendment would allow the Capital Improvements plan to fund seven additional projects: Underwood Creek Parkway road replacement, Bender Park Roadway repair and drainage, boilers and boiler pumps at KK garage, Lyons Playground replacement, park walkways, as well as improvement for Noyes, Cool Waters, and Mitchell Park. It would do so by removing funding for the Charles Allis façade repair.

This amendment would have no impact on general obligation bond financing or sales tax financing. It was adopted unanimously by the Committee on Finance at today’s meeting.
