Finance Committee Recommends Additional Funding for McKinley Beach Safety Study
MILWAUKEE – The Finance Committee of the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a resolution from Supervisor Sheldon Wasserman authorizing the Parks Department to spend an additional $70,000 on a safety study at McKinley Beach today. The study will identify what measures are necessary to improve swim safety, beach sustainability and water quality.
“Three people died at McKinley Beach last summer. We need to know why, and this study will answer that question. McKinley Beach must be safe and at this time we don’t know if it is,” said Supervisor Wasserman.
In response to these tragedies, Supervisor Wasserman sponsored an amendment to the 2021 Milwaukee County Budget which allocated $10,000 for a McKinley Beach safety study. The Parks Department determined that additional funds would be needed to complete the study.
The Milwaukee County Parks Department closed the beach indefinitely in August of 2020.
The Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors is expected to consider the allocation of additional funds on Thursday, March 25.
