Fatal hit-and-run crashes are absolutely preventable
Statement by Alderman Cavalier Johnson - October 5, 2017
This morning I was saddened to hear about a tragic and senseless loss of life. Reckless and irresponsible driving has caused yet another fatal hit-and-run crash on the 7600 block of W. Appleton Avenue. First, the suspect ignored a red light and then struck the victim’s vehicle, fatally injuring the passenger. This accident comes only days after the community was rocked by a similar incident at the intersection of 35th & Capitol Drive, where a young mother and her 11-month-old daughter were struck and killed by a reckless driver. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s friends and family, and to everyone else impacted by their loss.
This type of tragedy is absolutely preventable. I’ve said it before and it still holds true—no place is so important to get to that reckless driving becomes acceptable. I continue to implore residents and neighbors to drive safely and follow traffic laws. If you or your friends have hopes of preventing a tragedy like this in the future, please obey traffic laws. We can avoid future fatalities, like the one this morning, by simply stopping at red lights. The lives of our residents are far too important.
