Fatal fires provide a stark reminder about fire safety

Statement of Alderman Mark Chambers, Jr.

By - Nov 22nd, 2022 10:33 am

This month has sadly included two fatal residential fires in the 2nd Aldermanic District, including one on Sunday (November 20) that tragically took the life of a 4-year-old boy in a home near N. 84th St. and W. Mill Rd.

Despite valiant rescue efforts by Milwaukee Fire Department personnel, the boy passed away after he was rushed to the hospital.

On November 15, a 68-year-old man died after a portion of the townhouse he was in caught fire near N. 61st and W. Stark.

I send my sincere condolences to the loved ones and friends of the boy and the man, and we should offer support and prayers of healing and comfort to the families as this is an incredibly difficult and sad time.

With the colder weather we are seeing the increased use of space heaters that can sometimes trigger fires. I strongly urge everyone to use heaters safely and to make sure to have working smoke detectors throughout your residence – and especially in all sleeping areas. Smoke alarms save lives!

If you are in need of a smoke alarm, please call the Smoke Alarm Hotline at the number listed below. Arrangements will be made for Milwaukee Firefighters to come to your residence and install a smoke alarm free of charge.

SMOKE ALARM HOTLINE: 414-286-8980.
