Regarding the Fatal crash at 1600 block of N. MLK Dr.:
There is an extreme speed bump at that location coincident with a traffic control signal at the intersection of Galena St.
IMHO, many of the speed bumps in Milwaukee are dangerous. That is, they are so extreme that driving across them at any speed above 5 to 10 mph is uncomfortable and potentially dangerous. I believe they should be designed and constructed to meet a national standard (if there is one) and they should be such that driving at the posted speed limit would not be dangerous.
IMHO, had I driven over the subject speed bump at the posted speed limit, didn’t see it coming due to many other signs and “bump-outs”, and hadn’t been holding the steering wheel firmly with both hands at 10:00 and 2:00, I would likely have gone out of control and hit something.
We need to keep in mind that some drivers are guests who are not familiar with the area streets and they may be driving in the dark and possibly in rain or snow such that the obstructions are confusing or not visible.
If I were the family of the deceased, I’d be looking at taking action against the City of Milwaukee for installing an obstruction at the intersection that may have been a causal factor.
Of course the car obsessed like PhilipStarr reach for any excuse to blame other than the most obvious one, the driver. Thousands of people drive the same area over the same bump every day with no issue. If you are unable to control your vehicle you should not be driving.
This press release says nothing about speed or of the driver was impaired in any way. Blaming it on traffic calming infrastructure is delusional. Streets in our city should not be designed and built to be like racetracks.
