Fatal Crash on N Mayfair Rd

Three individuals died after a crash that occurred on N. Mayfair Rd. at W. Wisconsin Av.

On Tuesday, December 13, 2022, at 12:05 pm, Wauwatosa’s 911 Dispatch Center received several 911 calls reporting a minor, hit and run, motor vehicle crash at Mayfair Rd and Watertown Plank Rd, involving a yellow public works-type vehicle. Shortly after, we received several 911 calls reporting a crash involving several vehicles and a vehicle fire at Mayfair Rd and Wisconsin Av.

The preliminary investigation found that a City of Milwaukee Public Works heavy-duty pickup truck was involved in the minor crash at Watertown Plank Rd, and continued southbound on Mayfair Rd. As it approached Wisconsin Av, it collided with several vehicles, which were stopped in traffic. Upon impact, three vehicles caught fire. Numerous bystanders rendered aid before first responders arrived to extinguish the fire and help.

Three adults died: two were occupants of the vehicles stopped in traffic, one was the driver of public works vehicle. We are not releasing their identities until family notifications are made. In addition to the three fatalities, two individuals were transported to the hospital with injuries of unknown severity, and their conditions are unknown at this time. One other individual was injured, but did not require transport to a hospital.

Wauwatosa Police, along with Wisconsin State Patrol and Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office, are investigating the crash. The circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation. Our hearts go out to the families of the deceased, the injured, and those who witnessed this horrific crash today. We appreciate the assistance from our partners: West Allis Fire Department, Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, Wauwatosa Fire Department, Wisconsin State Patrol as well as Bell Ambulance, and the Safety Division of the City of Milwaukee Public Works.

Lastly, thank you to those citizens who called 911, and those who jumped into action to help the victims of this crash.
