Enough is Enough!
In the fight against reckless driving, we all have a role to play. The police need to ticket and arrest the offenders, the City Attorney needs to prosecute the first offense in municipal court, and the District Attorney needs to prosecute a second and subsequent offense in circuit court.
But doing all of that means nothing unless the judges hold offenders—especially repeat offenders—accountable for their actions.
Do they hold them accountable? To what extent? Is there wide variation in the severity of sentences meted out, depending on the courtroom in which a defendant finds him- or herself?
These are questions that are often asked but seldom answered. But they must be answered if the public is to play an informed role in the democratic process of electing the judges who make these weighty decisions.
Fortunately, there is a group of volunteers who, though they know all too well the pain and loss that reckless driving can bring in its wake, are able to channel their hard-won wisdom into purposeful action.
Enough is Enough, who will be presenting at the Public Safety and Health Committee tomorrow morning, shines a light on the sometimes obscure and inadvertently cloaked proceedings of the Courthouse.
They therefore play a pivotal role in helping the public stay aware of the last and most important stage of accountability and deterrence when it comes to the battle to curtail reckless driving in our city.
Please join us at 9 a.m. TOMORROW (Thursday, January 29) in Room 301-B in City Hall (200 E. Wells St.) for this presentation.
This is a battle that we cannot afford to lose.
