Drive Recklessly and Lose Your Car
Statement of Alderman Scott Spiker May 9, 2023
Two-time offenders take note: If you are pulled over for driving recklessly a second time, and you ignored the first ticket you got, you’ll now need to find a ride home. Council action today, pending mayoral approval, means the Police Chief will soon have the power to impound your vehicle, whether it is registered or not.
Will this solve the problem? Of course not. Will it help move the ball forward? Absolutely. Traffic charges for “reckless driving – endangering safety” shot up 133% from 2021 to 2022. Every day brings a new story of someone carelessly and callously putting the lives of other drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and even their own passengers in danger.
Giving the Police Chief the power to take away someone’s ability to inflict such harm is a critical step forward. Today, we take that step.
