Department of Transportation performance management initiatives save $1.5 billion since 2011
Innovations, efficiencies save nearly $100 million in 2016 state fiscal year
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) today released a new report titled, Better, Faster, Lower Cost: An Efficiency Report from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. The report itemizes numerous initiatives WisDOT has implemented to enhance performance and reduce cost in all of the department’s functional areas including highways, DMV and State Patrol. Since 2011, the performance management measures have saved $1.5 billion including nearly $100 million in the 2016 state fiscal year. WisDOT released a similar report two years ago.
“Our priority is to get the most from existing resources,” said WisDOT Secretary Mark Gottlieb. “Many activities are underway throughout the department to improve our performance and work to provide a safe and efficient transportation system. We’ve adopted a culture of innovation, efficiency and continuous improvement.”
As part of efforts to be leaner and more effective in delivering projects and services, WisDOT has implemented a comprehensive, transparent, performance improvement system (MAPSS – Mobility, Accountability, Preservation, Safety and Service). MAPSS sets ambitious, tangible goals and identifies areas for ongoing improvement without compromising WisDOT’s commitment to safety and service.

Current highway closure: Milwaukee County WIS 241 (27th Street) near the Root River is closed in both directions, Milwaukee County The timeline for reopening these roads remains unknown, as river levels are still cresting, and additional rain is anticipated. WisDOT officials are closely monitoring the roads and river levels and will reopen them as soon as it is safe to do so. While it’s difficult to predict if or where flooding may occur, WisDOT offers these tips: Flooding conditions may change rapidly so drive with caution at all times. Never drive through standing water or around barriers. As the safety slogan goes, “Turn Around, Don’t Drown!” It only takes a foot of rushing water to sweep away or float most cars and just two feet of rushing water can carry away SUVs and trucks. Just six inches of floodwater will reach the bottom of most passenger cars, causing loss of control and possible stalling. Stay alert and slow down. Follow designated detour routes if state, county and local roads experience flooding. If you must travel, check 511 Wisconsin for the latest information on any road closures or impacts.
