(WISCONSIN) –  Deisy Espana officially announces her campaign for Wisconsin State Assembly District 9. The open seat, previously held by Representative Marisabel Cabrera who successfully won her race for Milwaukee County Circuit Court Branch 43, presents an opportunity for new leadership and direction. As a South Side Milwaukee native, a proud daughter of Mexican immigrants, and an active community organizer, Deisy Espana understands the particular needs of the diverse district and offers a bold, progressive agenda that centers on working-class families.

In a campaign announcement statement, Deisy Espana said:

“Being raised on the South Side of Milwaukee by immigrant parents, I saw firsthand how  marginalized communities have been deprived of having a seat at the table and having a voice in the policies that have affected and continue to affect them at a disproportionate rate, which is why as a member of Gen Z, a Latina, an organizer, and proud daughter of Mexican immigrants, I am excited to announce my candidacy for the 9th Assembly seat.”

If elected, Espana would be the youngest member of the Wisconsin State Assembly, providing a much-needed voice for constituents who do not see themselves represented in government. At 21 years-old, Deisy does not see her age as a disadvantage, but rather an opportunity to bring to the table issues that directly impact younger generations, but that have long been overlooked and neglected.

“Now with new maps, we have an opportunity to completely change the way the legislature looks and deliver the wins that our communities deserve. As the 9th District’s representative I will fight for immigrant rights, to ensure we restore driver licenses for our undocumented community and continue to fight for in-state tuition and professional licenses for DACA recipients,”  said Deisy Espana. “I will push for the expansion of BadgerCare, the restoration of workers’ rights, strong public schools, and other policies that will serve and advance working class families. ”
