Decision to reinstate ballot drop boxes is in the best interest of Wisconsin voters

Statement of Alderman Khalif J. Rainey January 25, 2022

Yesterday, an appeals court blocked a previous judge’s order and ruled that absentee ballot drop boxes can be utilized for the upcoming February 15 primary election. While this decision only impacts the February primary, it is still a win for the residents of Milwaukee and those across the state.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to residents utilizing ballot drop boxes in large numbers during recent elections, and the decision to limit their accessibility was a thinly veiled attempt at suppressing the vote in areas like Milwaukee.

The right to vote is sacred, and we should never be making it more difficult or inconvenient to return a ballot. The fact of the matter is that ballot drop boxes are a safe, secure way for residents to cast their vote, and they should be allowed as another tool to help increase participation in our democracy.
