Current state of COVID-19 calls for additional action
Statement of Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic November 12, 2020
In recent weeks, the state of COVID-19 in our city, county and throughout all of Wisconsin has worsened. The number of cases, hospitalizations and deaths continues to rise with no immediate end in sight. Our hospital systems are on the verge of being overwhelmed, and health leaders are continuing to plead with residents to take this virus seriously.
In light of this, I’m sponsoring legislation (requested by the Milwaukee Health Department) that will be discussed at the Public Safety & Health Committee meeting today allowing for bars and restaurants in violation of public health orders to receive an increased fine of up to $5,000. Additionally, the city will increase compliance and enforcement checks at businesses.
While many businesses in Milwaukee have submitted COVID-19 safety plans and are taking proper precautions, even a small handful not enforcing mask mandates or other health orders is unacceptable given the current state of affairs.
We must all do our part and continue working together to limit the spread of this virus so we can come out of this pandemic a stronger and healthier city on the other side.
