MILWAUKEE – Yesterday, the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution in support of Pride Month and the display of the Intersex Progress Pride Flag at County buildings and locations throughout the month of June. The resolution, introduced by Supervisors Burgelis, Rolland, Clancy, and Martin, aims to demonstrate Milwaukee County’s commitment to inclusivity and support for the LGBTQIA+ community. Supervisor Burgelis issued the following statement:

“As Milwaukee County strives to become the healthiest county in Wisconsin for all residents, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation, it is crucial that we demonstrate our unwavering support for the entire LGBTQIA+ community,” said Supervisor Burgelis “The County Board voted in favor of adopting this resolution 16 to 1 (Supervisor Deanna Alexander opposed). The vote was not unanimous, which demonstrates that there is still work to be done for LGBTQIA+ acceptance in Milwaukee County. By flying the Intersex Progress Pride flag, we send a clear message that Milwaukee County stands united in promoting inclusivity, acceptance, and equal rights for all.”

The Department of Administrative Services – Procurement and Facilities Maintenance Divisions will assist county departments in obtaining the Intersex Progress Pride flag and communicate the contents of the resolution to departments responsible for maintaining their own flagpoles.

Pride Month, observed nationally in June since 2000, celebrates the contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and two-spirit (LGBTQIA2S) individuals to society and highlights their ongoing fight for equality, safety, and acceptance.

The Intersex Progress Pride flag was designed by Daniel Quasar to celebrate the diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community. The legislation serves as a recognition of Milwaukee County LGBTQIA+ employees and residents and their diverse backgrounds.

The resolution now heads to the desk of County Executive Crowley.
