MILWAUKEE – Today the County Board of Supervisors adopted a proposal from Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson asking the Office of Sustainability to develop an evaluation for capital projects’ contribution to the county’s goal of carbon neutrality.

“Earth Month is a time to focus on how central our natural world is to our day-to-day lives and make an extra effort to preserve it for generations to come. One way we can preserve our planet is to ensure Milwaukee County’s building and infrastructure projects have a lens on climate,” said Chairwoman Nicholson. “When I wrote a resolution committing Milwaukee County to becoming carbon neutral by 2050, that was just the beginning. I am proud that today we took yet another step to put our commitments into practice.”

The criteria would be used to help inform the county’s process for prioritizing building and infrastructure projects the county pursues.

The resolution also authorizes county departments to apply for grants from the Daybreak Fund, a Milwaukee organization seeking to fund projects addressing climate change, water quality, and equity.

“Partnerships with local organizations doing the work on the ground are vital to achieving our climate goals,” added Chairwoman Nicholson. “Applying for grant opportunities like the one offered by the Daybreak Fund help us raise vital funds to reach a carbon neutral future. Saving our planet is an all-hands-on-deck effort.”

Chairwoman Nicholson authored a 2021 resolution committing Milwaukee County to becoming carbon neutral by 2050 and developing a strategic plan to achieve this goal.
