Council approves amendment to help fund HACM maintenance
Today the Common Council approved an amendment as part of the adopted 2024 city budget that will provide $250,000 in funding for addressing maintenance issues at Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee (HACM) facilities.
The Aldermen said the Housing Authority Maintenance Fund will be administered by the Community Development Grant Administration within the Department of Administration, for the purposes of improving maintenance at HACM-owned and -managed properties, and noted the amendment removes $250,000 from the Materials Recycling Facility Repair capital funding (cash/tax levy).
“The MRF funding was not tied to any specific, immediate spending plan, and we identified a much higher and better use for it,” Aldermen Bauman and Stamper said.
“Our constituents and neighbors who reside in HACM facilities have been dealing with broken plumbing, broken toilets, mold, vermin infestations, and many other festering problems. Our amendment will help address the significant backlog of repair and maintenance issues plaguing HACM properties, especially older senior high rise buildings where persons who tend to be older and with physical disabilities reside,” the Aldermen said.
