Congresswoman Gwen Moore Votes to Avert Damaging Government Shutdown

H.R. 7463 extends the funding deadline for the four appropriations bills set to expire from March 1st to March 8th. The legislation also extends the funding deadline for the eight remaining appropriations bills set to expire on March 8th to March 22nd. Congresswoman Moore released the following statement:

“Today, I voted to prevent a government shutdown. As a federal lawmaker, I know that any government shutdown is damaging and if prolonged, can endanger access to key services that millions of Americans depend on and create financial hardship for government workers and military services members forced to go without pay through no fault of their own.

We didn’t have to be here. We’ve had a deal on overall FY 2024 funding levels for some time now.  But House Republicans kept pushing for cuts and for a range of harmful policy riders attacking abortion, the LGBTQ community, and our environment, just to name a few that they knew could not become law.

While today’s continuing resolution will maintain current funding levels, I know that Congress cannot continue delaying fully funding our government.  More than 5 months into the fiscal year, it is critical that Congress passes full appropriations legislation that meets the needs of our communities.

Programs to help Americans keep food on the table, prevent and address child lead poisoning, provide energy assistance for struggling families, support our veterans, and more, must be funded to serve those who need it, including my constituents. We also need to address the looming funding crisis facing WIC, which could threaten access to nutrition services for millions of women, children, and families. It is vital that these appropriations’ bills support these key priorities and exclude extreme GOP poison pills.

Today’s continuing resolution gives lawmakers more time, so Congress through the power of the purse, can fund the pressing needs facing our communities.

Hopefully, this is the last continuing resolution we will need, and I am pleased that congressional leaders are making progress toward finalizing FY 2024 appropriations legislation, bills that I hope I can review in the coming days.”
