Congresswoman Gwen Moore Statement on Working to Improve Public Housing in Milwaukee
“Public housing is a vital resource, especially for our most vulnerable citizens, who are low income, disabled and elderly. Quality housing and healthy communities is something we must keep working towards.
My staff and I have met with and had a number of discussions with Common Ground leadership and residents that live in Housing Authority City of Milwaukee (HACM) properties who have raised concerns about living conditions, crime, safety, and disrepair of facilities, among others. I wanted to ensure that their concerns were taken seriously, investigated, and appropriate actions were taken. To that end, I have held meetings with other stakeholders, including HACM leadership, the Mayor, regional HUD officials, and Common Council members who have shared interest in the well-being of HACM residents.I continue to listen to and work with stakeholders to help ensure the safety and well-being of my constituents. For example, I have submitted an FY 2025 Community Project Funding request to the House Appropriations Committee that, if enacted into law, would provide funding for HACM for technology and equipment such as security cameras, security fencing, and improved lighting. Hopefully, these efforts will help deter criminal activities and ensure the safety of HACM’s residents and visitors.
I will continue working together with Common Ground, the City, and the federal government to ensure that all people have a safe and a decent place to live and that they are treated with dignity and respect.”
