Congresswoman Gwen Moore Statement on UW-System Board of Regents Vote

By - Dec 18th, 2023 03:31 pm

“Wisconsin Republicans’ political stunts and partisan obstructionism continues to come at the expense of our state. I am deeply disappointed with the deal made between the Republican-led legislature and University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents.

Diversity and inclusivity are not optional but essential elements of a thriving academic community. The reduction of resources in these areas jeopardizes the UW system’s ability to cultivate an environment where all students, regardless of their background, feel valued, supported, and empowered to succeed.

The Wisconsin GOP’s efforts to remove DEI from the UW system is part of their ongoing attempts to erase and devalue the lived experiences of women and people of color. Cutting back on these vital programs undermines the importance of diversity and inclusion in education, hindering progress toward a more equitable and supportive learning environment. Removing DEI efforts sends a message that not everyone’s stories, struggles, and perspectives matter.

DEI initiatives are not merely symbolic gestures but integral components that enrich the educational experience, promote understanding, and strengthen our workforce.”
