Congresswoman Gwen Moore Calls on Trump Administration to Prevent Looming Hunger Crisis, Release Contingency FoodShare Funding

The Trump administration is refusing to use $5 billion in SNAP/FoodShare contingency funding and existing authorities to fund SNAP/FoodShare benefits in November, creating a massive hunger crisis. In response, Congresswoman Moore released the following statement:

“Soon, 42 million Americans, including my constituents, will be forced to figure out how they will feed their families without a critical lifeline. What is most despicable is that this looming hunger crisis is entirely preventable.

In the USDA’s shutdown plan, the agency acknowledged that the contingency funding could be used during this shutdown to keep vital benefits flowing to millions of Americans. The plan has now disappeared from the USDA website.

What has changed since then? The Administration’s decision to use FoodShare and SNAP as political weapons against our most vulnerable citizens.

I am calling for the Trump administration to release this funding and use its authority to fund SNAP programs, ensuring families can continue to keep food on the table. I applaud Governor Evers for joining a multi-state lawsuit, calling for the Administration to take the same actions.

The Trump administration must immediately reverse its decision to deprive children, veterans, seniors, people with disabilities, and working families of food. The cruelty must end.”
