Compounding violence shakes the community

Statement of Alderman Khalif J. Rainey September 14, 2021

By - Sep 14th, 2021 10:05 am

Yesterday (Monday, September 13), multiple heinous acts of violence occurred near the intersection of North Sherman Boulevard and West Burleigh Street. In the early hours of Monday morning, a teenager was shot and killed. I send my best to the family and friends of this young man who lost his life far too soon.

The violence was compounded later that night as five people were shot near the same intersection during a vigil for the teen that lost his life earlier that day.

This is wholly unacceptable and as a community we must do better to put an end to these senseless shootings. Guns are NEVER the answer to solve disputes, and our children, friends, family members and neighbors deserve better than to fear gun violence during a moment of grieving and sadness – or at any other point and time.

Suspects in both shootings are being sought by police. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Milwaukee Police at (414) 935-7360 or Crime Stoppers at (414) 224-TIPS or use P3 Tips App to remain anonymous.

In the wake of this violence, I would also encourage those in need of support to reach out for help.

For those who were affected by the incident (witness to the incident or its aftermath), you can receive assistance by the calling the city’s Mobile Trauma Response Team (MPD), at 414-257-7621 or by contacting Milwaukee County’s 24-hour Mental Health Crisis Line at 414-257-7222.
