Common Council Approves COPS Hiring Grant

By - Jan 19th, 2021 05:40 pm

On Tuesday, January 19, 2021, the COPS Hiring Grant was approved by the Common Council. As a result of this decision, 30 new police officers will be fully funded for the next three years through a $9.7 million grant. We appreciate that the decision by the Common Council to approve the grant was not unanimous and understand that it comes with the expectation that we, as a police department, will continue our efforts to improve as an agency.

As part of the file (Substitute File #200676, item #22), the entire Executive Command Staff signed a document highlighting the reforms the Milwaukee Police Department has made over the past six months and pledging our commitment to address each of the seven issues outlined by various elected officials.

The Milwaukee Police Department looks forward to honoring its commitment while working with our community and system partners to continue to build sustainable neighborhoods free of crime that are built on positive relationships.
