Committee Advances Resolution Affirming Milwaukee County’s Commitment to Election Integrity and Support for Election Workers
MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors‘ Committee on Judiciary, Law Enforcement and General Services today unanimously recommended adoption of a resolution, authored by Supervisor Anne O’Connor and cosponsored by Supervisors Shea, Vincent, Gómez-Tom, Martin, Rolland, Martinez, Bielinski, Roundtree Jr., Capriolo and Johnson, Jr. affirming Milwaukee County’s commitment to secure, accurate, accessible, and transparent elections while expressing support for election workers and opposing intimidation directed at election officials and voters. During committee, the resolution received support from the League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County and All Voting is Local, who both testified in favor of the proposal.
“When federal agents visited the private home of Milwaukee County’s Elections Director instead of contacting the Election Commission through official channels, it raised serious concerns,” said Supervisor Anne O’Connor. “Our election officials deserve to do their jobs without harassment or intimidation. This resolution stands with the dedicated public servants who administer our elections with professionalism and integrity, and it reaffirms that voters should choose their leaders, not the other way around.”
Supervisor O’Connor also thanked the election officials, municipal clerks, poll workers, election inspectors, and volunteers who administer elections across Milwaukee County.
“These public servants work long hours, often late into the night, to ensure every eligible voter has the opportunity to cast a ballot and that every lawful vote is counted according to Wisconsin law. Their commitment to transparency and public service deserves our gratitude and our support.”
The resolution follows reports that a representative of the Federal Bureau of Investigation visited the private residence of Milwaukee County Elections Director Michelle Hawley while seeking information related to the 2020 presidential election.
County Clerk George Christenson stated that the 2020 election in Milwaukee County was conducted lawfully and transparently, noting that its results have been upheld through recounts, audits, and court proceedings.
In addition to affirming support for election workers, the resolution encourages all eligible Milwaukee County residents to verify their voter registration, understand their voting options, and participate confidently in upcoming elections. Information about voter registration, absentee voting, polling locations, and upcoming election dates is available through the Milwaukee County Election Commission.
“The strongest way we can support our democracy is by participating in it,” O’Connor said. “I encourage every eligible voter to make a plan to vote in the August Primary and again in November. Your voice matters, and your vote matters.”
The full Board of Supervisors is expected to consider the resolution at its July meeting.
