City to recognize National Literacy Month with special display week of September 23

By - Sep 17th, 2024 09:50 am

Alderwoman Larresa Taylor, in partnership with the city’s Office of Early Childhood Initiatives, will recognize National Literacy Month with a special display in the first floor rotunda of City Hall, 200 E. Wells St., the week of September 23. The rotunda display will include a variety of activities that can be done at home to help promote literacy and school readiness for young children at home. There will also be a “take a book, leave a book” table all week.

“Literacy is a critically important skill for young people, and can set them on a path of continued learning into the future. Study after study shows that when youth can read proficiently, particularly at a younger age, they are more likely to succeed as they age. That is why during National Literacy Month we are partnering with the Office of Early Childhood Initiatives to promote literacy during the early years, as well as promote what our public libraries have to offer everyone,” said Alderwoman Taylor.

The community is also encouraged to participate in National Literacy Month in any of the following, easily accessible ways:

  • Visit one of our thirteen library branches and use your library card or sign-up for a library card. Visit mpl.org to find a free class fitting for most ages and to check hours of operation.
  • Visit Mke4kids.com and check out the 30-day calendar full of literacy challenges for you do at home or while on the go!
  • Donate a book to the Milwaukee Office of Early Childhood Initiatives. Drop off to City Hall, 200 East Wells Street Room 606 during regular hours. Or to another organization of your choice.
  • Read to a child! Inquire about being a volunteer reader at a school in your area.
