City of Milwaukee receives perfect score on Human Rights Campaign’s Municipality Equality Index

By - Dec 1st, 2021 03:11 pm

The Human Rights Campaign – the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer civil rights organization – recently released its annual Municipality Equality Index (MEI), and for the fourth year in a row the City of Milwaukee received a perfect score of 100 points. The MEI examines how inclusive municipal laws, policies, and services are for LGBTQ+ people who live and work there. Cities are rated based on non-discrimination laws, the municipality as an employer, municipal services, law enforcement and leadership on LGBTQ+ equality.

Alderwoman JoCasta Zamarripa is delighted by the news, and commends the City’s work toward creating a more inclusive environment. “As Milwaukee’s first openly LGBTQ+ Alderperson I am incredibly proud of the work our city has done, and will continue to do, on behalf of all Milwaukeeans to make sure our shared community is a welcoming and inclusive place,” she said. “I want to thank the Equal Rights Commission for their continued dedication and hard work, as well as the Human Rights Campaign for the work they do locally and nationally in the name of uplifting underserved communities.”

Milwaukee is one of seven cities in Wisconsin rated by the MEI, and in 2021, only 110 out of a total of 506 cities rated nationally received perfect scores.
