MILWAUKEE – County Board Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson made strides to advance a statewide initiative to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion across Wisconsin at last week’s Wisconsin Counties Association’s (WCA) annual conference in La Crosse, Wis.

“I was proud to bring the work Milwaukee County is doing around racial equity to a statewide audience at the Wisconsin Counties Association conference,” said Chairwoman Nicholson. “We know this can be a difficult issue to discuss, but by working together we can honor diversity, achieve equity, and ensure the inclusion of all people across Wisconsin.”

Chairwoman Nicholson was a featured speaker at the WCA General Assembly with Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach, where they asked WCA members to join in the launch of regional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity (DEI) District Meetings. These meetings will serve as educational opportunities for counties to share their thoughts and efforts related to DEI.

Chairwoman Nicholson and County Executive Streckenbach also spoke with the Wisconsin County Executives and Administrators Association at the conference to extend their ask for engagement on a statewide DEI initiative.

Alongside Milwaukee County Office on African American Affairs Director Jeff Roman and Milwaukee County Director of Strategic Planning Isaac Rowlett, Chairwoman Nicholson presented in the “Governing for Equity:  Moving Toward Organizational Change” workshop.

In July 2020, the County Board unanimously adopted a resolution sponsored by Chairwoman Nicholson “calling upon the State of Wisconsin and all Wisconsin counties to make positive policy changes which will work toward eliminating systemic poverty and inequality.”
