County Supervisors Strengthen Climate Action Plan During Earth Month
MILWAUKEE — In recognition of Earth Month, the Board of Supervisors reaffirmed Milwaukee County’s commitment to the continued advancement of its Climate Action 2050 Plan in the resolution passed today with a vote of 17 to 1. The progress update and renewed call to action today remind everyone of the goals set in the County’s 2021 resolution to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 — a resolution originally authored and propelled by Chairwoman Nicholson, with the full support of the Board of Supervisors.
On Earth Day 2021, the Milwaukee County Board unanimously approved the landmark resolution calling for the development of a comprehensive Climate Action Plan. Since then, Milwaukee County has made significant strides with operational emissions already being cut by 46%. This reduction translates to cleaner air, healthier neighborhoods, and meaningful progress toward a more sustainable future.
The Climate Action 2050 Plan is rooted in four strategic pillars:
- Avoiding new emissions
- Reducing existing emissions through innovation and efficiency
- Creating local green job opportunities for youth and adults
- Improving public health and equity by addressing climate hazards such as extreme heat, flooding, and poor air quality
The Climate Action 2050 Plan is a product of years of collaboration, engaging the County Executive’s Office, County departments, local organizations, and community stakeholders. It includes mechanisms for annual progress reporting to ensure transparency and accountability.
The resolution will now head to the desk of Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley for his review.
