“Bugs Rule!” Wehr Nature Center Shines a Spotlight on Insects at 19th Annual Bug Day
Franklin, WI — On Sunday, September 14th, Wehr Nature Center invites the public to celebrate the incredible world of insects at its 19th Annual Bug Day, a beloved family tradition that’s more than just fun and games. This year, “Bugs Rule!” brings together hands-on activities, scientific discovery, and climate-conscious education to show how tiny creatures play a giant role in the health of our planet.
As climate change accelerates, scientists warn of a steep decline in global insect populations, a silent crisis with serious consequences for pollination, food webs, and ecosystem health. Bug Day raises awareness through interactive exhibits, bug-themed games, and expert talks designed to educate while entertaining.
“Bugs are more than creepy-crawly curiosities,” says Howard Aprill, Event Organizer and Naturalist, “They’re the unsung heroes of our ecosystems. Their decline is a red flag for the health of the planet. We want to inspire people of all ages to appreciate and protect them.”
Event Highlights Include:
- Live Insect Zoo – Get up close with amazing arthropods from around the globe—touch a tarantula, greet a giant roach, and more!
- Creepy Crawly Café – Brave a bite of crunchy crickets or chocolate-covered mealworms.
- Larvae Land – A special play zone for younger bug lovers, with insect-themed games and hands-on exploration.

Why Insects Matter Insects are nature’s pollinators, decomposers, and pest controllers. Yet, studies show populations are plummeting due to habitat loss, pesticides, and rising global temperatures. Bug Day offers a fun, family-friendly way to start an important conversation about biodiversity, sustainability, and what each of us can do to protect these vital species.
Join us at Bug Day and help make the world a little more bug-friendly—one six-legged friend at a time.
