Black Birders Week
Everyone deserves access to nature and all its beauty without prejudice or fear for their safety. That is why the Zoological Society of Milwaukee, along with the Milwaukee County Zoo, is once again hosting a Black Birders Week event.
The Society has partnered with the Zoo, Nearby Nature, BIPOC Birding Club of Wisconsin, and Lake Michigan Bird Observatory to welcome students from Hawthorne Elementary School. These students will:
- learn how our trained experts band birds
- meet prominent Black Birder Dexter Patterson, and learn about others who have made waves in the science field
- use binoculars to try and find some wild birds
- play a migration game
The Milwaukee County Zoo is welcoming these partners and students on May 28 starting at 9 a.m. Then, on May 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Zoological Society will be participating in an event at the Havenwoods State Forest. There will be a bird walk, a migration obstacle course, tabling from a new non-profit Urban Nature Connection, and guests can make a bird feeder. This event is made possible by a partnership with The Society, Havenwood Neighborhood Partnership, and BIPOC Birding Club of Wisconsin.
Black Birders Week began in 2020 in response to racism experienced by Black outdoor enthusiasts and professionals. Through events like this, we are growing the next generation of birders — and conservationists!
