Baldwin Delivers $25 Million to Improve Road Safety Along National Avenue in Milwaukee
Funding through Baldwin-backed Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will improve bike and pedestrian safety, reduce car speeds, and boost public transit
MILWAUKEE – Today, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) announced she successfully delivered $25 million in federal funding to make necessary safety improvements along National Avenue in Milwaukee. Per the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), the National Avenue corridor is identified as part of Milwaukee’s High Injury Network where some of the most fatal and serious injury crashes occur. The funding for WisDOT will be used to reconstruct National Avenue from 1st Street to 39th Street and add measures to keep pedestrians, bikers, and drivers safe, including raised bike lanes, raised crosswalks, a raised intersection, and improved sidewalk space. Baldwin both pushed the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to back this project and voted for the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that provides funding for the project.
“I wrote a letter to Transportation Secretary Buttigieg, championing Wisconsin’s Department of Transportation (WisDOT) grant application to redesign this corridor and make needed enhancements that advance safety and equity,” said Congresswoman Moore. “I am so excited to see funds poured into such a culturally and commercially thriving part of Milwaukee’s Near South side area. These much-needed improvements, such as replacing deteriorating pavement, making curb ramps ADA compliant, creating separated bike lanes, improved street lighting, and raised crosswalks, will make this corridor safer for commuters, pedestrians, and bikers. I thank the Biden-Harris administration for supporting this important project, which my constituents will benefit from throughout their everyday lives.”
“Here in Wisconsin, we’ve gotten to work fixing the darn roads and ensuring our state’s infrastructure is ready for a 21st-century workforce and economy, but we know our work continues,” said Gov. Evers. “Thanks to Sen. Baldwin’s leadership in securing millions of dollars through the federal RAISE program, we are continuing our work to bring better, safer roads, highways, bike lanes, and railways to communities across our state, all while moving forward toward building a more sustainable future for all.”
WisDOT will utilize funds to reconstruct National Avenue from 1st Street to 39th Street and add Complete Streets improvements, including separated raised bike lanes, travel lane reductions, raised crosswalks, a raised intersection, transit platforms, and improved sidewalk space.
