EXHIBITIONS
Through October 29, 2023
More information: https://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/exhibitions/eneida-sanches-material-trance
Eneida Sanches (b. Salvador, Bahia, 1962) is a metalsmith, printmaker, sculptor, and installation artist. She has been exploring the idea of trance as a religious phenomenon and the collective social representation of Afro-Bahian culture and its histories for more than twenty years. Trance, according to Dr. Rachel Elizabeth Harding, “is an elemental experience in many African and Afro-Atlantic religions, and ultimately, it is a poetic-artistic means of communication between different planes of experience.” For Sanches, the body is the locus of trance, making it a material practice—a state of immanence rather than transcendence. Material Trance brings together a selection of the artist’s prints, plates, sculptures, and installations.

Regular visitors to Lynden have probably noticed the work the land team has been doing on the formal garden. After restoring the southern edge, we are now ready to plant our new juniper trees along the fence line, and we need some help digging holes and getting the trees properly settled. The work will take most of the day, and we will provide snacks and refreshments. Bring along a favorite shovel if you have one and pack a lunch if you plan to stay all day.

HOME BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP
Thursday, August 17, 2023 – 7-8:30 pm
VIRTUAL
FREE.
More information and to register:
https://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/home-book-discussion-group-2023
The Lynden/HOME Refugee Steering Committee book discussion group, moderated by Lynden’s Kim Khaira, is for those interested in firsthand accounts of displacement. We consider works of non-fiction and fiction, including autobiographical and semi-autobiographical works, by writers who have faced or are facing forced displacement as refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants. Where stories of persecution, historical trauma, and loss of livelihood are effortlessly conveyed by storytellers, journalists, and humanitarians who search out or stumble upon the lives of refugees, we seek out the words of those to whom these stories belong: the narrators who are the closest to their own stories, and the stories of their people, friends, family and, of course, refugees. In August we continue with Her First Palestinian, a collection of stories by Saeed Teebi. Newcomers welcome!

COMING UP IN SEPTEMBER
September is a big month for workshops. We start off with a Dear Self with Love: So Long Summer workshop from Jenna Knapp and the Labyrinth Society of Lynden Sculpture Garden (September 2); poet and artist-in-residence Chuck Stebelton offers a bird walk on August 10; the land team will lead a tree walk on September 16; and Dennis Carl and Kallia Walkowiak expand our fiber offerings with From Crop to Fiber: Growing and Processing Flax on September 17. Dog Day is September 16, which coincides with our final outdoor HOME event of 2023, a Craft Market. HOME migrates online later that week with Stories as We Move, our interview series, on the 19th; a new season of Multilingual Story Time on the 20th; and the Book Discussion Group on the 21st—we’ll be finishing Saeed Teebi’s Her First Palestinian. Doors Open returns on September 23 (we are participating on Saturday only). We have two Call & Response events: a performance with artist-in-residence Portia Cobb on September 9 and Scott Barton will host a Common Ground community meal on September 30. Volunteer opportunities in the gardens and the natural areas roll around at the end of the month, and our final sound bath of the season is scheduled for September 29. Art + Nature Laband Art Club, our afterschool classes for children and youth, resume in September–watch the website for details. Tuesdays in the Garden continues to meet weekly. If you’re an artist, or know an artist, save the date for the opening of the 2023 Nohl Fellowship application cycle on September 5.
