MILWAUKEE, WI – Today, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin gave remarks at UMOS’ Faith-Based Luncheon on her new legislation to help fight poverty, The Stronger Way Act.

“I was inspired to write the Stronger Way Act when I saw the incredible work being done by organizations like UMOS in Milwaukee to fight poverty. I was honored they asked me to speak at their Faith-Based Luncheon on my bold legislation to put real solutions in place to create opportunity for all and reward hard work,” said Senator Baldwin. “Together we can meet the challenge of lifting people up and out of poverty with respect, opportunity, and the dignity of work.”

The legislation has received support from local, state, and national leadersincluding UMOS’ President and CEO, Lupe Martinez.

“UMOS is in full support of stronger efforts that help reduce poverty by giving the people of Wisconsin and everyone in this great nation the opportunity to get and keep family supporting employment,” said Martinez. “We think the Stronger Way Act is one of those strong efforts.”

In July, Senator Baldwin introduced The Stronger Way Act with Cory Booker (D-NJ). The legislation will help meet the challenge of lifting people up and out of poverty, moving our unemployed into the workforce and advancing tax reforms that make work pay.  Specifically,The Stronger Way Act creates a new federal partnership to support state and local transitional jobs programs; rewards work with tax reforms that raise incomes for working families and individuals; and targets tax credits to working families with children.

Tomorrow, Senator Baldwin will attend the Heartland Alliance National Conference in Chicago and participate in an on-stage discussion with Heartland Alliance President Evelyn Diaz on The Stronger Way Act. Senator Baldwin’s discussion on Wednesday will live streamed at 9:30 a.m. CDT here.
