EXHIBITIONS
SCOTT BARTON: BURIED IN THE HEART: A REPAST FOR ANGELS AND MARTYRS
Through May 2022
More information: https://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/exhibitions/scott-barton-buried-heart-repast-angels-and-martyrs
A major aspect of honoring the dead and the living is encapsulated in the foods and meals of mourning, ebó (offertory), sacraments, and gustatory rites for both entities. The repast is foundational as a site of memory to generate a protocol that fosters and enshrines collective memory. Our repast rites for the dead are concurrently touchstones for the living: providing a bridge between the realms, and an ongoing dialogue with our heritage traditions. In this exhibition of artefacts and video, food scholar and chef Scott Barton has created a literal and symbolic repast that individually and archetypically honors the deaths of Ahmaud “Maud” Arbery, Breonna Shaquelle Taylor, and George Perry Floyd Jr., and the maiming of Jacob S. Blake Jr. By creating and sharing a meal we also honor the multitude of individuals killed by state sponsored or private violence. This repast, begun during the hard lockdown, focuses on dishes that the four individuals would have enjoyed eating or cooking. The repast was shared with four of Barton’s neighbors–Charles Daniel Dawson, Marie Dutton Brown, John Pinderhughes, and John Dowell, all Harlem elders–also in the roles of individuals and archetypes. Within their lives and their works, these four individuals are dedicated to civil rights, Black culture, the politics of identity and respect for Black life, and restorative justice.
This is a Call & Response event.

We will engage together in an uplifting space to check in with ourselves, release inner stress, and create unique artworks to express and integrate our emotions, thoughts, and senses in the present moment. We will journal and reflect on our experiences through the visual language of collage and foster acceptance, empathy, and synchronicity by sharing pieces of ourselves with others through expressionistic collage. In March and April, we are taking a closer look at forced displacement in Myanmar. Milwaukee is home to the largest concentration of Rohingya refugees in the United States, as well as refugees from other Burmese ethnic groups. In March, we explored the Myanmar democracy movement and Myanmar/Burmese refugee resettlement in the US with Hlawn Hlawn, May Sabe Phyu, Sharifah Shakirah, and Moe Aung. The conversation continues in April as we involve participants in action plans to address and assist in refugee resettlement with input from Milwaukee-based leaders and representatives from Myanmar and Southeast Asian communities.

HOME BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP

VIRTUAL
FREE.
More information and to register: https://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/home-book-discussion-group-abdulrazak-gurnah-admiring-silence
The Lynden/HOME Refugee Steering Committee book discussion group, moderated by Lynden’s Kim Khaira, is for those interested in firsthand accounts of displacement. We consider works of non-fiction, including autobiographical and semi-autobiographical works, by writers who have faced or are facing forced displacement as refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants. Where stories of persecution, historical trauma, and loss of livelihood are effortlessly conveyed by storytellers, journalists, and humanitarians who search out or stumble upon the lives of refugees, we seek out the words of those to whom these stories belong: the narrators who are the closest to their own stories, and the stories of their people, friends, family and, of course, refugees. In April, we will be finishing Abdulrazak Gurnah’s Admiring Silence. Newcomers welcome!

Individuals with a few hours to spare and those ready to commit time on a regular basis are all welcome.
For our first work day, we will be helping artist-in-residence Kim Khaira develop a “tinctorial garden” that will feature native plants used for making natural dyes. You will be working alongside Khaira and the land team to remove daffodil bulbs and get this new garden project off the ground. Volunteers are encouraged to bring gardening gloves and digging tools (if you have them). Water, snacks, and additional tools will be provided.

International Sculpture Day is a worldwide celebration intended to further the International Sculpture Center’s mission of advancing the creation and understanding of sculpture and its unique, vital contribution to society. Although we are no longer able to commission a fantastic cake in the shape of one of our sculptures for this event, you can still see these creations on Eat Cake’s Facebook page. Even without cake, it’s a fine day to take a relaxing stroll among Lynden’s fifty sculptures, or to do a deeper dive into some of your favorites using our mobile web site, lynden.tours.

The book for April is Am I Small?, written by Philipp Winterberg and illustrated by Nadja Wichmann, read in Dari/Farsi (for our new Afghan neighbors) and English. The sculpture garden is open to art and nature lovers of all ages daily, 10 am-5 pm; closed Thursdays. Thanks to the generosity of the Herzfeld Foundation and other donors, admission is currently waived. Learn more about visitor guidelines here: https://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/visit.
