Alderman Burgelis joins Harbor Commission, dives in during first meeting
This morning, Alderman Peter Burgelis attended his first Board of Harbor Commissioners (Harbor Commission) meeting as the newly appointed ex-officio Aldermanic commissioner. In addition to regular business, a coming new lakefront feature was on the agenda, as Discovery World is partnering with Kiln to provide the first floating sauna with “a natural plunge” in the Midwest.
Alderman Burgelis thanked Kiln for bringing something new to our community, and challenged Kiln to establish intentional inclusion in their business plan. “It’s important for Milwaukee’s diverse residents that we ensure everyone in our community can access all of our great lakefront attractions. There are many community partners that can be a great match with Kiln,” Alderman Burgelis said. The floating sauna (a boat) is common in the lakes, fjords, and city harbors across Northern Europe, and provides a place of relaxation and community. The sauna cold plunge cycle is a Scandinavian tradition with many health benefits, and enjoyed by people of all ages.
The Commission approved Kiln’s one-year lease with Discovery World, and the floating sauna is set to launch in November.
The Board’s next meeting is scheduled for 8 a.m. on August 1.
