Ald. Coggs introduces communication file to discuss SOPs related to individuals in police custody

Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs has introduced a communication file in response to a February 23rd incident in which Keishon Thomas passed away in a holding cell at the Milwaukee Police Department District 5 station. Milwaukee police recently released redacted footage regarding the incident. The file (Common Council file #211793) aims to bring the Milwaukee Police Department and Fire and Police Commission to the table to discuss standard operating procedures (SOPs) around those who are detained in police custody.
“What happened at MPD District 5 in February was tragic, and we owe it to the victim’s family and the community to have a transparent conversation around SOPs related to the detention of individuals, what can potentially be improved or enhanced and other measures to ensure those in police custody are safe,” said Alderwoman Coggs.
The file will be heard at a future meeting of the Common Council’s Public Safety and Health Committee.
