Ald. Burgelis Secures Finance Committee’s Approval of Resolution to Waive Chicken Coop Permit Fee for Low-Income Milwaukeeans
Today, Wednesday, December 11, the Finance and Personnel Committee of the Milwaukee Common Council successfully recommended approval of a resolution to waive the $35 chicken permit fee for low-income residents who self-certify a hardship. The ordinance (file #241268), introduced by Alderman Peter Burgelis, aims to reduce barriers for those interested in keeping chickens as a means of supplementing their food sources and promoting access to fresh, nutritious food.
The resolution, which amends Milwaukee’s animal license and permit code, is an important move in addressing the needs of low-income communities by making chicken husbandry more affordable. This decision comes as part of a broader strategy outlined in the Milwaukee Fresh Food Access Report, which seeks to improve fresh food access for Milwaukee residents, particularly those in economically disadvantaged areas.
