AFP-Wisconsin Slams Governor Evers and Public Service Commission for Another Round of Crippling Energy Bill Hikes

Evers’ appointees drive $300 million in new hikes for 2026-27 on top of $2 billion since 2019

Madison, WI— Americans for Prosperity–Wisconsin (AFP-WI) is calling out Governor Tony Evers and his Public Service Commission for yet another round of devastating rate hikes on Wisconsin families, which will take effect on January 1, 2026. Under Governor Evers’ watch, the commissioners have approved more than $2 billion in electric and natural gas rate increases, which includes another $300+ million recently approved for 2026 and 2027.

AFP-Wisconsin Legislative Director Jerry Ponio released the following statement:

“Skyrocketing energy bills are hurting Wisconsin families, renters, and small business owners already struggling to make ends meet, pushing the American Dream further out of reach. Today, our state ranks among the highest in the Midwest for electric rates – proof that the current system under Evers is broken.

“Wisconsin needs leadership that puts people ahead of utility profits—and AFP-WI is leading the charge. Through grassroots action, we’ll keep pressing for the accountability families deserve and fight for energy policies that put consumers first.”

Alliant Energy’s residential electric customers are facing 13% higher rates over two years, while Xcel Energy’s residential electric rates will jump more than 20% in the same period. Madison Gas and Electric’s proposal will be voted on later this month.

Through AFP-WI’s grassroots efforts statewide, we are mobilizing activists to demand transparency and will continue standing up to handouts that increase utility bills, as we did by defeating the Right of First Refusal (ROFR) that blocks competition, protects monopoly profits, and forces families and businesses to pay more.

Through broad-based grassroots outreach, Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is driving long-term solutions to the country’s biggest problems. AFP activists engage friends and neighbors on key issues and encourage them to take an active role in building a culture of mutual benefit, where people succeed by helping one another. AFP recruits and unites Wisconsinites behind a common goal of advancing policies that will help people improve their lives. For more information, visit www.AmericansForProsperity.org
