AFP-WI Applauds Legislature for Protecting Taxpayers Against Future Unilateral Tax Hikes

Madison, WI – Americans for Prosperity-Wisconsin (AFP-WI) applauds the Wisconsin State Senate’s passage of AJR 112, the first consideration of a Constitutional Amendment that prohibits any Governor from exercising partial veto power to increase any tax or fee. This amendment protects Wisconsinites and preserves the separation of powers between branches of government.

AFP-WI State Director Megan Novak made the following statement:

“Wisconsin taxpayers should never be forced to shoulder the burden of another 400-year tax hike, determined by a single person in our state. Governor Evers has not only used his veto pen to implement a 400-year property tax hike but has also rejected nearly all tax relief offered by the Legislative majorities this session. This proposed amendment provides necessary oversight and protection for Wisconsin taxpayers in the future.

“AFP-WI applauds the legislature for recognizing this injustice and taking the first step to safeguard hardworking Wisconsinites from undue financial burdens imposed by one individual.”

A constitutional amendment must pass both chambers in two consecutive legislative sessions in order to be considered for inclusion on the ballot for voters to decide. Therefore, the legislature must pass the same resolution next session.

Through broad-based grassroots outreach, Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is driving long-term solutions to the country’s biggest problems. AFP activists engage friends and neighbors on key issues and encourage them to take an active role in building a culture of mutual benefit, where people succeed by helping one another.
